もう知らない人もいるかのしれませんが、イタリアではかってliraという通貨が使われていました。これはもともと銀貨を計る天秤libraからきたものとされています。（英語でも天秤座はLibraですね。）
イギリスの通貨はご存知の通り、EUに入ろうが、出ようがポンドのままです。(英語ではpound)これも元々は重さの単位ですね。
元々ラテン語では重さの単位を表す言葉として libra pondoという言葉がありました。その影響でいろいろな国で重量や貨幣の単位として用いられているようです。（重量としてのポンドはlbと書かれるのもそのためです。）
libra pondoの省略形として ある国ではliraが用いられたり違う国ではpondoが用いられたりすることとなっています。イタリアではliraでした。£は現在はイギリスポンドを指す記号ですが、（Lに似たは文字はLibraからきているので本来liraを表す記号です）10年前までトルコリラの記号は£でした。
さてイギリスポンドですが日本ではポンドと呼ばれますが 正式にはスターリングポンドと言います。これはポンドはリラと同様に一般的な単位の名称のため「英国の」ポンドということを強調するため（米ドルと同じように）こう呼ばれます。例えばエジプト、シリアなどの通貨もポンドですので単にポンドというと何処？（ついでに言うとそれお金、重さ？）というようになってしまいます。そしてイタリア語ではポンドはpondoではなく
sterlinaまたはlira sterlina（直訳すると英リラ）と言われます。 イタリアからliraは消えたけれどイギリスにはliraが残っています。😱 まあ£だしまいっか、、
