カエサルの言葉として有名な「サイは投げられた」 これは軍事遠征からローマに帰るカエサルが、軍備を解除すると定められているルビコン川を渡る時の決断をしたときに発した言葉です。
実は私は長らくこのルビコン川はポー川のことだと思っておりました。だってローマ国境の川ですよ。すくなくとも多摩川ぐらいの規模があってっも、、、
しかしながらルビコン川は思いのほか小さい川なのです。
近世になり、ラベンナとリミニの間に Uso、Fiumicino. Pisciatelloの３つの川がルビコン川の候補としてあげらていましたが、どれも小川と言っていいほどのレベルです。なんか想像していたのと違う。
ここで余計なことをしてくれたのがかのムッソリーニです。1932年に勝手にFiumicinoをRubiconeと命名してしましました。よって今我々がルビコン川と呼んでいるのはムッソリーニ以前はFiumicinoと呼ばれていた川です。（本当のルビコン川ではない可能性があります）
しかしながら歴史家の中ではPisciatelloを支持する説が多いようです。
