レンズ豆ってレンズに似ている豆だからレンズ豆っていうんでしょう？

lensという言葉は元々は豆を意味するラテン語からきた言葉です。
光学レンズはその豆（現在日本でレンズ豆と言われている豆）に形がにているのでそう名付けられました。
イタリア語だとレンズがlente(←英語のlens←ラテン語のlens）、レンズ豆がlenticchia（←ラテン語のlens）となります。
lenticchiaが日本に来てレンズにカタチが似ているのでレンズ豆と言われるようになりました。（元々は豆が先なんですけどね）
日本では大晦日はそばを食べますがイタリアではコテキーノとレンズ豆（cotechino e lenticchie)の料理をたべます。これはレンズ豆がコインに似ているため金運がアップする、という連想からきたようです。日本でも栗きんとんを食べますが、日本人もイタリア人も考え方は変わりませんね。
ちなみにひよこ豆はcece, インゲン豆、あずきやささげのような形の豆はfagiolo まめを総称してlegumiと言います。
