瓜ってイタリア語で何っていうか知っていますか？
実は、、
melone なんです。（ちなみに英語でもmelonです）不思議ですよね。
これはもともと瓜の原種であるmeloneが平安時代以前に日本に伝わり（原産は中東、インドなどと言われています） 瓜と名付けられました。瓜二つなんていう言葉もあるのでまさに日本原産のものかと勘違いしてしまいますよね。
西洋ではmeloneの品種改良が進み今のメロンになりました。それが近代以降日本にはいってきてメロンと呼ばれるようになりました。そう考えると歴史のロマンと感じますね
