日本の将棋に似たチェスは世界中で行われていますが、元々のルーツは両方ともインドのゲーム(caturanga)にあると言われています。かたやシルクロードを伝わって日本にきて、かたやペルシャ経由でヨーロッパに伝わりました。
イタリア語で「王手」はscacco mattoといいます。直訳すると「狂ったチェス」なんのこっちゃですが、元々はペルシャ語の「王は死んだ」(ペルシャ語ではシャー・マットとなります）という意味でそれがイタリア語っぽく変化しています。
また英語のcheckmateもいかにも英語らしい響きですが これもまたペルシャ語の「王は死んだ」という意味からきています。
